Metro says project cut accidents

Metro Police are attributing a 17 percent reduction in traffic accidents to their two-month campaign educating the public on dangerous intersections.
Comparing their numbers with arrests made in May and June, the department has tallied 94 fewer reported accidents during August and September of this year, said Sgt. Greg McCurdy.
Metro's campaign targeted 16 local intersections determined by their crime analysis unit to have a high frequency for accidents.
In August, the traffic division began releasing to the media a series of public information advisories warning that patrols would be increased in those 16 areas. In September, the division concentrated on enforcement activities.
Traffic officers issued 1,142 citations for motorists driving through red lights, speeding, failing to yield, improper lane changes and inattentive driving behaviors. Two arrests were made for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and drug charges.
