* RADIO WARS -- From today through Oct. 23, Las Vegas public radio station KNPR 89.5-FM and its Reno counterpart, KUNG, will be competing to see which station can raise $100,000 the quickest in the second annual "Las Vegas-Reno Challenge." The winner receives a $6,000 prize from Circus Circus Enterprises Inc., the event's sponsor. Loser receives $4,000. To make a donation, call 456-6695.
* CHARITY SHOPPING -- In honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Liz Clairborne will host a Charity Shopping Day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at its store in the Fashion Show Mall. Ten percent of the day's proceeds will go to Safe Nest, a local domestic violence agency.
* 'FESTIVAL OF FUN' -- The Oktoberfest event, 5-10 p.m. Oct. 26 at 1704 Castleberry Lane, is a fund-raiser for Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Senior Vice Commander Evelynne Dunn, who has been elected to lead the group's national convention next August. There will be a raffle, door prizes and dinner. Tickets are $7.50. Call 452-6269.
* 'MUSIC FOR TIME' -- The family-oriented music festival will be from noon to 10 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Rainbow Library Amphitheater, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive. Several local artists will be featured, including Atta-Boy Skip, Someone, Melancholics, Rahne, Chamber Seven, Corinthian Flux, Sackcloth, Wail of Sumer and Morgana Athena. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Proceeds benefit Aid for AIDS of Nevada. Sierra Health Services is a sponsor of the event. Call 284-5002 for more information.
* HAVE A BALL -- "The Witches and Warlocks Charity Ball," to benefit the hungry and homeless of Las Vegas, will begin at 10 p.m. Oct. 31 and go to 5 the next morning at the Hippo and the Wild Bunch Nightclub, 4503 Paradise Road. Featured will be Magickal Marissa performing a witches ceremony at midnight, food and drink, live music and dancing, and a costume contest. Tickets are $10. Call 731-5446.
* LUXURY CRUISE -- Lied Discovery Children's Museum has announced a fund-raising raffle drawing for a luxury cruise for two, donated by Crystal Cruises. The 11-day adventure departs Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on March 12. The final destination is Acapulco. Tickets for the drawing, which will be Friday at Caesars Palace, are $10 each or 12 for $100. * LAST CALL FOR RAFTERS -- Passengers are needed for the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Nevada's second annual "Day on the River." The rapid-free Colorado River trip on Oct. 26 is a fund-raiser for the nonprofit group. The price is $50, which includes a lunch and T-shirt. Call 367-1440.
* KISS A PIG -- The Nevada Affiliate of American Diabetes Association recently announced the candidates for its annual "Kiss a Pig" event, 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Oct. 26. "Kiss a Pig," held in conjunction with Desert Springs Hospital's Diabetes Fest, features prominent Las Vegans soliciting donations for support of persons with diabetes. The candidate who raises the most money will kiss a live pig in the parking lot at Desert Springs. Candidates for this year are Chuck Lenzie, Nevada Power Co.; Burt Black, Salute to Seniors Programs; Erin MacDonald, Sierra Health Services; Bill Bayno, UNLV basketball coach; Tom Koenig, Desert Springs Hospital; Laura Jenchowski, Rainbow Girls of Nevada; Len Zane, UNLV Honors College; Steve Schorr, Prime Cable. * SCHOOL SITE DONATED -- Las Vegas native Jim Rhodes, president of his home-building company was recognized at a school district meeting for his company's donation of an $800,000 parcel of land for a new elementary school. "I'm the one who's honored, actually," said Rhodes. "Since I began my company more than 10 years ago, I've wanted to be in a position to give back to this community. And now that's exactly what I am doing." The school site, on 10 acres of land near Buffalo Drive and Farm Road in the northwest part of town, is surrounded by Rhodes Homes newest residential housing development, Elkhorn Springs. In addition to the school site, Rhodes is donating an adjacent five acres of land for use as a park. The park land itself is valued at $400,000.
* CONCERTS FOR MAKE A WISH -- The Fern Adair Conservatory of the Arts' "Concert Fantasy and Fantasy Petite" concerts raised more than $16,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Nevada. The check presentation will take place during the annual Make-A-Wish picnic, which will be at the Hills Park Amphitheatre in Summerlin. The presentation will immediately precede a 45-minute show presented by the Fern Adair Conservatory performing groups. With the addition of this year's donation, the Fern Adair Conservatory has raised more than $60,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and total donations amounting in more than $100,000 to local charities.
* OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE FACILITY -- Bank of America Nevada has awarded a $50,000 grant from the BankAmerica Foundation to Opportunity Village for the building of a new work-training facility in Henderson. The new 22,000-square-foot facility will cost $3 million to build and another $375,000 to operate on an annual basis. The facility will provide an estimated 200 adult Henderson residents with mental retardation with a state-of-the-art work-training facility. The new facility will be at the intersection of Burkholder and Lake Mead, which is scheduled to open in winter 1998.
* VAN DONATION -- Opportunity Village Association for Retarded Citizens has received a 1997 GMC Safari van from Desert GMC-Buick of Las Vegas. It is the eighth vehicle that the dealer has donated to the organization.

* RUN FOR THE BLIND -- The fourth annual fund-raiser for the blind in Southern Nevada will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. It features a motorcycle run from Henderson to the Rainbow Library, plus live bands, food and door prizes. The sponsors are Tribe M.C. and Staz Motorcycle Shop. Call 631-9412 or 727-6931.
* PHYSICAL THERAPY -- In celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, there will be a 5K/10K fun run/walk beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Green Valley Athletic Club in Henderson. Proceeds will benefit New Vista Ranch, a nonprofit organization serving disabled young adults. The registration fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Corporations may sponsor up to four participants for $70. Call 255-5018.
* YMCA GOLF TOURNAMENT -- YMCA of Southern Nevada programs for at-risk youth will benefit from all proceeds of the third annual YMCA Golf Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 4 at the Las Vegas Country Club. Four-person teams and individuals are invited to register for the tournament. A scrambled best-ball format will showcase the course. The tournament schedule includes registration and a light lunch beginning at 11 a.m., followed by an 11:30 shotgun start. Heavy hors d'oeuvres, awards and a raffle follow the tournament in the clubhouse. Tournament proceeds will assist youth and family outreach projects at the YMCA, a nonprofit association. * OFFICERS APPRECIATION DINNER -- DARE Inc. of Las Vegas will have its second annual Appreciation Dinner on Saturday, honoring Clark County DARE officers. The dinner, sponsored by the Boyd Gaming Corp., will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the silent auction in the main ballroom of the Stardust hotel-casino. The program and dinner will follow at 7. * RUMMAGE ITEMS -- The Shade Tree Shelter for Women and Children is having a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, 300 S. Ninth St. All proceeds benefit the shelter. To donate items, call 385-0072.

* REBUILD HOMES & BRIGHTEN LIVES -- Christmas in April is seeking volunteers in fund-raising, marketing, home inspection and coordinating to assist in rehabilitating the houses of low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners. The program is enacting the old-fashioned barn-raising spirit -- rebuilding America one home at a time. Call 474-2425.
