County news briefs

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

* IMMIGRATION MAN -- The County Commission has unanimously endorsed a resolution to not do business with companies that employ unauthorized aliens. The resolution was requested by Commissioner Erin Kenny, who said she wants to ensure that county taxes aren't spent on paying undocumented workers. The resolution further requires that all vendors doing business with the county not employ unauthorized aliens on any contract work. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 already makes it a criminal act to hire undocumented workers, but Kenny said the resolution enables the county to break a contract with a vendor if it's found out they employ undocumented workers.

* ROAD RESTRICTIONS -- The commission has approved an ordinance restricting commercial vehicles from driving on the median lane of county-maintained highways and six-lane roads. The ordinance is an attempt to increase traffic safety and eliminate congestion, and to prompt state transportation officials to adopt similar regulations for state roads throughout Clark County.

* NO GREYHOUNDS -- The commission has introduced an ordinance banning greyhound racing in unincorporated areas. Greyhound racing is legal in Henderson, but Commissioner Bruce Woodbury said there was "strong evidence" of unregulated events in unincorporated Clark County, "and everything around it ... that leads to the destruction of animals." A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 10 a.m.

* HEALTH CENTER -- The architecture firm of Ysidro R. Barron will design a new Community Health Centers of Southern Nevada and master plan the site for the new center at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Vegas Drive. The $2.15 million project will replace the existing health center, and will house an array of health services for Clark County's low-income, medically underserved population. Service will include family practice, pediatrics and adolescent care, OB/GYN, WIC, internal medicine, health education programs, dental services and mental health services.

* PRIME TIME -- Two Clark County-produced videos have been selected for the A&E Networks' History Channel Showcase. One is "The History of Aviation in Southern Nevada," a joint production of the Department of Aviation and Parks and Recreation. The other is "Celebration on Hard Ground: The Native American Arts Festival," a documentary of the Clark County Heritage Museum's annual festival, also produced by Parks and Recreation.
