UNLV coach welcomed back
Monday, Oct. 14, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
PROVO, Utah -- It was Home coming at Brigham Young Saturday, which meant renewing old acquaintances.
Even though he was tech nically the enemy, UNLV offensive coordinator Charlie Stubbs was treated warmly by his old mentor at Cougar Stadium.
"Coach (La Vell) Edwards was very positive," Stubbs said after BYU routed the Rebels 63-28. "He told me we were on the right track and to hang in there."
Stubbs, a 1978 graduate of BYU, admitted coming back to his alma mater was special.
"Being here brought back a lot of fond memories," he said. "I went for a run this morning and I ran by the old houses I lived in and I saw a lot of the same people who were my neighbors."
As for the bounce-back effort by the UNLV offense, Stubbs said he believed the Rebels could move the ball against BYU. It was just a matter of not getting away from the game plan.
"We put in a sprint draw this week and it seemed to work well," he said of the against-the-flow running game that negated BYU's attacking linebackers. "We thought we could play off their aggressiveness."
UNLV had 418 yards of total offense.
"We definitely have something to build on (for Hawaii)," Stubbs said.
Ineptitude mark set
With Saturday's loss, UNLV set a school record for consecutive defeats. The streak is now nine, going back to last year when Jeff Horton's team dropped its final two games.
The previous streak occurred in 1972 when the Rebels lost their final eight games during a 1-10 season.
UNLV's last win was a 34-24 triumph over North Texas on Nov. 4, 1995.
Attendance record
They may be winless, but people are turning out to see the Rebels. At least on the road.
In three road appearances, UNLV already has drawn 195,095 fans. The previous record was in 1993 when 183,264 came out to watch UNLV during six games on the road. Saturday, 64,872 made it to Cougar Stadium to watch BYU improve to 6-1.
Remember, the game does not count in the WAC standings because it had been scheduled before UNLV joined the WAC. BYU still is 2-0 in league play while the Rebels remain 0-4.
Extra points
* INJURY UPDATE: UNLV reported just two significant injuries from Saturday's game -- S Dan Stewart has a sprained shoulder and LB Leroy Gambrell has a severely sprained foot. Both will be re-examined today and their status for Hawaii is unknown. ... LB Jerrad Pierucci (shoulder) and RB DeJohn Branch (knee) did not make the trip.
* SHORT WEEK: There won't be much time at home this week for the Rebels. The team leaves Wednesday afternoon for Hawaii and will work out Thursday and Friday in Honolulu. Saturday's game with the Rainbow Warriors will be televised live back to Las Vegas at 10 p.m. on KUPN Channel 21 (Prime Cable Channel 2). A reminder that this week's UNLV Quarterback Club luncehon at the Showboat will be held at noon Wednesday instead of the usual Thursday date because of the team's early departure to Hawaii.
