Shootings in NLV investigated

Monday, Oct. 7, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

Investigators were weeding through conflicting stories today to determine why a couple was barraged with at least 14 bullets during one of two weekend shootings in North Las Vegas.

Quincey Gantt, 19, and Latoya Porter, age not available, were sitting on the stairs of their home at 3301 Civic Center Drive, near Lake Mead Boulevard and Carroll Street, about 12:30 a.m. Saturday when they overheard someone arguing and then a number of bullets hit their torsos, police said.

Paramedics transported Gantt and Porter to University Medical Center, where Gantt remained in fair condition, a nursing supervisor said. Porter has been released.

Complicating detectives' jobs is that witnesses to the shooting are providing different answers to how many people were involved in the supposed argument, what the argument was about and other specifics, said North Las Vegas Lt. Chris Larotonda.

Regarding another incident early Saturday, police are working with a vague description of a gunman believed to have shot another man in North Las Vegas.

About 2:30 a.m., Roberto Gonzales, 29, was sitting in his car in the 1600 block of Davis Place when a thin, black man about 18 or 19 approached him, demanded money, and then shot Gonzales in the lower abdomen as he stepped out of the car, Larotonda said.

Police are not sure what type of weapon the assailant used. Witnesses reported seeing the man speed off in a red-colored compact car.

Gonzales was in fair condition at UMC.

Police are asking that anyone with information on the incidents to call the department at 649-9111 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
