Some mail outlets will be open on weekends

The traditional Christmas mailing season starts Friday with some area post offices and other mail outlets opening on weekends throughout December in anticipation of larger volumes.

"Las Vegans will have access to more than 40 mailing locations this year," said U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Dee Dee Terrano, noting that mail will be delivered on Friday.

She said eight post office windows in area Lucky Stores will be closed Thanksgiving Day, but will open Friday and remain open weekends until Christmas Day.

Mailing locations in the Boulevard, Meadows, Fashion Show and Belz malls will open Monday and stay open daily through Dec. 23, Terrano said.

Throughout December, the main post office on Sunset Road generally processes 1 million pieces of outgoing mail a day, with the peak on Dec. 16, when an estimated 1.6 million pieces will be handled. This is up from the usual 850,000 pieces of outgoing mail a day.

Including incoming mail, the main post office handles 6.5 million to 8 million pieces a day during the Christmas holidays, up from a normal 5 million pieces a day during other times of the year, Terrano said.
