Letter: Check out nonprofits to see if the money aids local issues

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

The Nevada Humane Society does not provide any services to Southern Nevada and serves only the northern portion of the state. I deeply resent the solicitation of the Nevada Humane Society. Obviously, the organization is hoping to take advantage of what it sees as the "deep pockets" of Southern Nevadans.

There are several not-for-profit animal organizations providing services locally. I would urge people to think about where their money is going before they contribute to an animal organization and what percent is spent in administrative costs. Ask for a breakdown of where the money is spent; an IRS Form 990 should be available.

I'm proud of the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society, its rescue efforts, and the work it does in trying to deal with the tremendous animal overpopulation problems in Southern Nevada. Find out the facts first.
