SUN STAFF REPORTS
Things are starting to come into focus for rap music's dynamic duo, Outkast.
Just look at the progress in their album titles.
The 1994 high school grads' debut was called "Southernplaylistcadillacmuzik." And it was just for kicks.
On the relatively simpler-titled "ATLiens," says Andre, "there's a lot more maturity."
"We're not doing music just to be doing it. It's not about bragging on a beat, because everybody can rhyme. It's all about what you say."
Both albums tell stories of life in the city. The urban narration of the songs on "ATLiens" lends insight into the experiences of Andre and his Outkast mate, Big Boi.
They range from "Jazzybelle," a tale of the plight of black women, to "Mainstream," a tale of the harsh realities of the music business.
What hasn't changed too much is Outkast's hip-hop style that melds smooth backing vocals, guitars and keyboards with distinctive rap-record scratches, a blending that yields a contemporary, funky sound.
The duo Outkast will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday in The Joint at the Hard Rock hotel-casino.
They're touring in support of "ATLiens," which has spawned the No. 1 single "Elevators."
"Southernplaylistcadillacmuzik," which was released just after their high school graduations, was a critically acclaimed platinum success.
To check out Outkast's message for yourself, tickets are $20-$30 at the Hard Rock hotel-casino's box office. Box office hours are noon to 8 p.m., extended to 9 p.m. on concert days. For more information, call 639-5066.
