Nevada Symphony to perform classics

Friday, Nov. 8, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

Selections will include Suites 1 and 2 from "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Sergei Rachmaninoff, and "The Hary Janos Suite" by Zoltan Kodaly.

Guest conductor Sidlin comes to Las Vegas from Portland, Ore., where he is the resident conductor for the Oregon Symphony. He has conducted regularly throughout the country and abroad, including hundreds of opera appearances. Sidlin is a recognized spokesman on "demystifying" symphony orchestras and has been featured on the "Today" show, "Good Morning America" and CBS' "Sunday Morning."

Sidlin loves to perform what he calls "aha" music, classical songs everyone knows but doesn't consider classical music. These types of songs are familiar (even though few know the music titles) from movie soundtracks and television and radio commercials.

"This is a fun and casual program," says Sidlin. "The afternoon features recognizable music that tell great stories."

Lyras, a native of Greece, has won a number of major international competitions. His solo recitals have included appearances at New York's Lincoln Center and Washington's Kennedy Center.

Tickets for the concert are $10 to $27 for adults, and $8 to 12 for seniors and students. They are available at the Ham Hall box office, 895-3801, and all Dillard's locations. For more information, call 792-4337.
