Dance workshops will keep you on the move
Friday, Nov. 8, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
The jitterbug, "reverse walk around" and "window and pretzel" are features of Western Swing I & II Workshops at the Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway.
The first workshop from 7-9 tonight will offer the jitterbugging basics to country music for dancers 16 years of age or older. The second workshop, 7-9 p.m. Nov. 15, will incorporate Western swing steps.
Traditional dances can also be enjoyed by enrolling in the Square and Contra Dance Workshops held tonight and 22. The two-hour programs, from 7-9 p.m., will be at the Black Mountain Recreation & Aquatics Complex, 599 Greenway Road. Live music will be provided as participants learn square and parallel line formations.
For an introduction into the oldest form of ballroom dancing, participants can enroll in the German-originated whirls of Waltz I which will be featured from 7:30-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. For those 16 years of age and older, this one-time workshop will introduce basic waltz steps, including the left box turn, spiral step and hesitation.
For country enthusiasts, a Country Stroll Dance Workshop will be offered from 7-9 p.m. Nov. 23, at the Silver Springs Recreation Center. During this workshop, beginners and advanced dancers can learn the latest country dances, including the "Sidekick." For Southern Nevada residents 16 or more, anyone is invited to join.
From 7:30-9 p.m. Nov. 26, Valley View Recreation Center will offer a class on the polka. This workshop will begin with the basic steps and lead into a number of more advanced dances, including the German polka. Big-band music will be alternated with country music so participants can learn variations on pacing and steps. Since this workshop is a very popular session and frequently fills to capacity, early registration is encouraged. The fee for each class is $5.
