U.S. Bancorp earnings

COMMENTS: The first-quarter results demonstrate the success of U.S. Bancorp's strategy of growing core businesses in a six-state market, CEO Gerry Cameron said in a news release announcing earnings. Operating income for the quarter was $201 million, an increase of 24 percent over the same quarter in 1995. Average loans increased $373 million or 6.6 percent annualized from fourth quarter 1995. Loan growth was strongest in commercial, real estate mortgage and lease financing, according to the financial report. (Nasdaq: USBC)
