School trustee Burr won’t seek new term

Clark County School Board member Jeff Burr announced today he will not seek re-election to the seat he has held since 1993.
Burr, 43, said he is stepping down after one four-year term because of family and business commitments and to concentrate more of his efforts on deconsolidation of the school district.
The Henderson lawyer and accountant is a leading proponent of splitting the nation's 10th largest district into smaller units to be more responsive to parents and students. A state committee has hired a consultant to study ways to break up the district.
Burr said he has accomplished many of the goals he set out to achieve, among them helping win passage of the $605 school bond issue in 1994, bringing back nighttime athletic events, establishing a districtwide staff development and training department, and instituting a better method for determining where schools are built.
Burr's District A covers Henderson, Boulder City, Laughlin and Searchlight. No candidates have filed yet for the seat, but Burr said he was announcing his intentions now "to give potential candidates a fair shot" at his seat.
Meantime, the board will meet tonight to discuss a proposed bond issue for the November ballot.
The administration has suggested a $634 million package for new schools and renovation, which would boost property taxes by $37 a year on a $100,000 home. An alternative $225 million plan would be tax-neutral.
