Disgruntled Tahoe Residents Studying Breakaway From Douglas County

Tuesday, May 14, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

The residents, who say they don't get the services they deserve for the taxes they pay, have hired attorney Harvey Whittemore of Lionel, Sawyer & Collins for $15,000.

"This is an important step for us," said Mike Jabara of the Tahoe Citizens Committee. "What we're trying to find out is: Would we wind up better or worse?"

Whittemore will look into forming a city stretching from the Stateline casino zone on Tahoe's south shore east to Glenbrook, or forming a county independent from Douglas County, which now encompasses the area.

A third option is the formation of a separate county combining the Tahoe portion of Douglas County with North Tahoe's Incline Village-Crystal Bay areas which are in Washoe County.

Incline Village recently proposed breaking away from Washoe and forming an independent Ponderosa County. That idea was killed largely because it was deemed fiscally marginal at best.

But Jabara's group says their plan allows for a much larger revenue base and would stand a much greater chance of success.
