Gorman girl most likely to shape black history

The Bishop Gorman senior, who submitted a 500-word essay, was selected from 25 applicants.
A part of McDonald's Black History Month celebration, the program honors outstanding high school seniors who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, character and scholarship, along with the potential to be future black history makers. Erica's scholarship will be for $650.
CHESS CHAMPS -- The Fong Elementary School chess team won first place in the Nevada State Chess Association competition. Jim Bridger Middle School took second place, and Beatty Elementary captured the third-place title. Jordon Butler, a fourth-grader at Bartlett Elementary School, was named the Elementary Individual Champion in the state sixth-grade-and-under division. Fong second-grader Michael Bolton tied for second place in the individual category with Laymon McGauhey, a student at Bridger. Jack Bolton, a fifth-grader at Fong, came in fourth in the individual category.
BUTTON DESIGNERS -- Lisa Ingram of Ira Earl Elementary School and Michael Domingo of William E. Orr Middle School were grand-prize winners in the recent Neighborhood Justice Center Peer Mediator Button Design Contest. Ingram beat 20 other entrants in the elementary division and Domingo topped two other contestants in the secondary division. Students trained as peer mediators by the Neighborhood Justice Center and who are serving as peer mediators at their schools were eligible to enter. The theme of the contest was peaceful conflict resolution.
TARGET AWARDS -- The Las Vegas Target stores awarded scholarships to local high school recipients as part of the Target All-Around Scholarship Program. Recipients are: Alicia Foyt and Jennifer Larsen, Chaparral High School; Joshua Brummett, Rancho; Erik Reynolds, Bishop Gorman; Lisa Bauer and Phuong Urga, Green Valley; Keri Vacono, Basic; Sheri Delp, Boulder City; Amanda Williams, Clark; Tejal Majmudar, Cimarron-Memorial; Elizabeth Mileti, Durango; and Maryann Reeder, Bonanza. Target has awarded $1.5 million to 1,371 students nationwide.
SANDS STUDENTS -- The Sands hotel-casino recently rewarded a group of 57 straight-A students by hosting them for a free lunch buffet. The Gibson Middle School honor students, ages 11 to 14, enjoyed a full day of activities, from miniature golf at the Scandia Fun Center to the Sands' Funtime Lunch Buffet. Sixth-grader Jason Sanderson said, "It was my goal to get straight A's and get to come to this. ... I'm gonna have to get more A's."
MUSIC HIGHLIGHTS -- In the school district's Solo and Ensemble Festival, Clark High School's jazz choir, Bravo, received a superior rating, as did the Madrigals and Chamber singers. The following students received individual superior ratings: Jesse Cannon, baritone; Sam Slade, tenor; Dayna Peterson, soprano; Wesley Nelson, baritone; Kylene Maxie, alto; and Kylene and Dana Peterson, duet. Soprano Heather Eck received an excellent rating.
MERIT FINALISTS -- The following Clark High School students have been named finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Committee: Jesse Cannon, John Cox, John Jusayan, Keith Wesolowski and Jenny Yiee. There are about 14,000 finalists nationally, selected from the millions of high school students who took the PSAT. The finalists are students who scored in the top one percent on the PSAT. From the finalists selected, 6,900 students will receive Merit Scholarships.
MARKETING WHIZZES -- Clark High School's DECA Chapter was represented at the recent state conference at the Hacienda. In the test of marketing and advertising know-how, Clark's Perryn Hale finished first in the advertising and visual display category. Christopher Powell and Josh Geidel finished second and third in vehicles- and petroleum-marketing competency. Hale, Powell and Geidel have been invited to the national conference in Orlando, Fla., April 26-May 1. Other Clark students recognized for achievement were Korina Gromek, finance and credit; Tery Damon and Crystal Ramseur, retail marketing; and J. Dapper, restaurant marketing.
