DOE sending $5 million for programs

The U.S. Department of Energy is sending $5 million to the Nevada Test Site for transition programs to deal with the effects of downsizing.
"The Cold War has ended but the dedicated workers who helped build our national security should not be left out in the cold," said Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., who helped secure the funds.
Using the seed money, Reid envisions the Test Site hosting laboratories to develop technology for defense, renewable energy, mining and the environment.
With the moratorium on nuclear testing, the Test Site, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, has seen employment drop from more than 8,000 in 1988 to less than 3,000 this year.
