National retail sales tax an idea whose time has come
Monday, March 25, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
A couple of weeks ago, a bill (HR3039) was introduced in the House of Representatives that would replace the current income tax system with a simple and fair national retail sales tax, and it would totally eliminate the IRS. It would seem that those favoring this action have come a long way in just a few years.
I am writing to encourage the SUN to address this issue with a substantial article on the pros and cons of a national retail sales tax. Your readers would find it valuable, informative and timely.
There is a national, nonprofit organization that supports a national retail sales tax. Citizens for an Alternative Tax System has impressive research to document the value of a national retail sales tax as well as literature explaining its implementation. CATS' national headquarters can be reached at (800) 767-7577. The local chapter can be called at 454-5736.
