Rebels’ character shown in commitment to community

Thursday, March 21, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

Obviously, his views are not shared by the many fans who attended this season's games. As President Eisenhower once said, "a man's true character is not measured in victories on the battlefield but rather, in how he leads his daily life."

Juipe's evaluation of this past season was skewed. Initially, expectations were high. However, injuries to key players and numerous bouts with illness forced players to assume new roles. As a fan, I was very pleased and impressed with the ability of the players and coaching staff to adjust while maintaining their enthusiasm.

The trends of recent incidents involving assaults and burglaries by athletes at other universities enable one to fully appreciate the character demonstrated by this year's Rebel basketball team. Rebel players have actively participated in community activities such as the Big Brother's program and homeless shelters.

Speaking for a majority of the Rebel basketball fans, thank you for your commitment to our community. We look forward to cheering the 11 returnees and welcoming the new recruits next season.
