Miller gets more traveling money

Thursday, March 21, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- Without discussion, the Legislative Interim Finance Committee approved a request from Gov. Bob Miller to juggle funds in his budget so he can travel out of state more often.

The committee Wednesday approved the switch of $29,000 in unspent salary from an unfilled position in the governor's office to Miller's travel budget. As vice chairman of the National Governors Association, he has been making frequent trips to Washington to deal with the federal budget question.

Since December, he has been out of state on 10 trips to such places as Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City.

He left Wednesday for another trip to Washington for more discussions on the question of Medicaid. He will be in New York next week for the National Education Summit.

Miller was in New York City in February to meet with media outlets to discuss the education summit, in Chicago in January for talks about the summit and in Los Angeles in February to promote movie-making in Southern Nevada.

The governor, gone 25 of the first 60 days of the year, was authorized to spend $22,000 for out-of-state travel this year. The $29,000 will be added to that.

His travels are expected to pick up next fiscal year when he becomes chairman of the governors association.

Executive agencies need approval of the Finance Committee before they can shift money around in their budgets.
