Michael New’s lesson is that orders are just that

I served in the military during World War II, the Korean War and, for a short period, during the Vietnam fiasco. It was apparent how discipline in the military was deteriorating. The effectiveness of the military in Vietnam was damaged by individuals questioning orders. You cannot have an effective military force if your decisions are based on a committee-type forum.
The military is an all-volunteer force. No one was drafted against his will. I think that when someone takes the oath to serve in the military, he intends to follow orders.
I would not care to fight alongside an individual I could not depend on, should he decide that his orders are illegal.
I respect Marie Hutton and her family and their position in this matter. However, I totally disagree with them.
