Sun City residents didn’t get a fair break on taxes

Thursday, March 7, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

Sun City residents pay a yearly fee of $400 to use the recreational centers; with 5,000 residences this is $2 million to maintain, repair and pay taxes on this property. If you join the golf club, your yearly fee is $700; again, this money supports maintenance, repairs and taxes.

Our security force is a volunteer one and they do an excellent job in patrolling the Sun City area. In the nine months I have resided here, I have never seen a Metro patrol car in my area.

There are no schools in Sun City. But if there were 1 1/2 children per household you would have 7,500 children and the city of Las Vegas would have to build elementary, middle and senior schools -- and staff them.

Yes, we pay our taxes -- in some cases twice -- and we save Clark County millions of dollars with our unique community.

I also feel we have a right to complain about how we are treated by the media and the assessor's board of appointees -- who are going to reject 98 percent of the 500-plus petitions -- for a fair and just tax solution in Sun City.

You better believe these petitioners will go to the state level so that a fair and just system of taxation may be adopted for all of Clark County, not just Sun City.
