Nevada briefs from Elko, Winnemucca

Ron Zurek of UNR and the UNR Foundation said a ground breaking ceremony probably will be held in late May or early June at the Carlin site.
Once the document is signed by Elko County Commission Chairman Royce Hackworth, the fire academy becomes a reality. The Carlin-Elko proposal won a competition with other Nevada communities two years ago.
UNR will lease the site for $10 a year for 99 years.
Thousands of students are expected to visit the Carlin-Elko area each year to attend the academy courses, the Elko Daily Free Press reported.
The fire academy will be located on the 426-acre Box K Ranch east of Carlin and just west of the Carlin Tunnels. Elko County bought the ranch for roughly $450,000 specifically for the academy.
The academy, which specializes in teaching how to fight oil refinery fires, is currently located in Stead north of Reno but has outgrown that area. The school plans to add earthquake and underground mine rescue programs when it moves here.

The $7,000 budgeted for clearing streets is history and the $2,000 set aside for the airport is melting away faster than the snow, The Humboldt Sun reported.
City Manager-Engineer Steve West said $8,475 had been spent so far on outside snow-clearing equipment and personnel to remove snow from the streets, while the expenditures on the airport have reached $1,647.
West said most of the $11,500 allocated for a mixture of sand and salt for the streets also has been used up, along with most of the material used to melt snow and to provide traction.

Carla Wille of Lamoille was named over four other applicants because of her enthusiasm, marketing skills and volunteer work with the chamber, according to Board President Lane Diedrichsen.
Wille recently was director of Elko General Hospital's intensive care unit and its cardiopulmonary unit.
She will succeed Nancy Sheffield who resigned last month to head the Elko General Hospital Foundation.
