More Candidates File in Legislature Contests
Thursday, March 7, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
McGinness, 48, manager of radio station KVLV in Fallon, is seeking another four-year term representing a sprawling district that covers Churchill, White Pine, Mineral, Nye, Lincoln, Esmeralda and parts of Lander and Eureka counties.
Other legislative hopefuls who have signed up since filing opened on Tuesday include Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas, Assembly Co-Speaker Lynn Hettrick, R-Gardnerville, and Assemblymen Pete Ernaut, R-Reno, and John Marvel, R-Battle Mountain.
Other Assembly incumbents who have filed include Jeannine Stroth, R-Las Vegas, Bob Price, D-North Las Vegas, Genie Ohrenschall, D-Las Vegas, Dennis Nolan, R-Las Vegas, Max Bennett, R-Las Vegas, Mark Manendo, D-Las Vegas, Sandra Tiffany, R-Henderson, Gene Segerblom, D-Boulder City, and Vonne Chowning, D-North Las Vegas.
A few former lawmakers are attempting political comebacks, including Republican Art Rader who is challenging Ohrenschall, Democrat Tom Collins who is seeking the seat now held by Assemblywoman Jan Monaghan, R-North Las Vegas, and Democrat Lou Toomin, who wants the Senate seat now held by Sue Lowden, R-Las Vegas.
In Carson City, attorney Mark Amodei has filed for the state Assembly seat being vacated by Tom Fettic. Both are Republicans.
In Reno, Republican Galen Mitchell has filed for the seat held by Assemblywoman Patricia Tripple, R-Reno, and Republican Dwight Millard filed for the seat held by Assemblyman Bernie Anderson, D-Sparks.
Voters will decide on all 42 state Assembly seats and 10 of the 21 state Senate seats this year.
There's a lot of interest in the state Assembly because several incumbents aren't running again and the first 21-21 tie in the lower house - created in the 1994 elections - isn't likely to remain.
In the Senate, Democrats are hopeful that they can gain more seats and end the Republicans' 13-8 voting edge in the upper house. The 10 open Senate seats include six held by GOP incumbents and four by Democrats.
