Drummer/composer Harper began his career at 22, playing with Dexter Gordon, then spent four years with Betty Carter's band before forming his own band, the Harper Brothers Quintet, with his brother Philip. In 1990, critic Leonard Feather declared them "the most brilliant new jazz group of the new decade." Their second album went to No. 1 on Billboard's jazz chart in 1991 for two months.
After splitting with his brother, Winard formed his own band two years ago.
