No end to the talents summer can awaken

Programs in which children can further their academic and artistic skills this summer:

* Clark County School District Extension Academy, which includes courses in reading, math, science, bookmaking, music, fine arts and computers. Classes began June 10 and will run through June 28. Tuition is $80 per student. Call 799-7912 for information.

* Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Summer Reading Program, which features activities during June, July and August. Call your local library for information.

* Henderson District Public Library Summer Reading Program, for ages 6 and older, with programs throughout June and July. Call 565-8402.

* North Las Vegas Library District Summer Reading Club, with activities scheduled for all ages during June and July. Call 649-2363.

* YMCA of Southern Nevada Summer Day Camps, which include a cooking camp, science quest, computer camp, fine arts camp and the Unity Construction Company camp for for older kids. Camps run during June, July and August, and fees start at $60 a week. Call 877-9622.

* Clark County Parks and Recreation summer programs in the arts, education, music, language and dance throughout June, July and August. Call 455-8200 for schedules and fees.

* Clark County Parks and Recreation Summer Resident Camps at Lee Canyon combine the traditional camp experience with the arts and sciences. One-week camps during July are $240 and $260 per child. Call 455-8200.

* City of Las Vegas Department of Parks and Leisure Activities Summmerlin Arts Camp with activities in art, theater and dance. The camp runs July 22 through Aug. 22 and costs $150. Call 229-6211.

* City of North Las Vegas summer classes include printing and dyeing, summer theater, ceramics and pottery. Drop-in programs will keep kids busy with arts and crafts, sports and field trips. Call 649-7737 for dates, times and fees.

* West Las Vegas Arts Center Summer Class Session includes African arts, airbrush, drawing, sculpting, broadcasting and studio classes, tap and ballet, salsa, African Congo drum, public speaking, tae-kwon-do, and teen theater. Ten-week sessions are $7, and classes begin June 25. For information, call 229-4800.

* The Las Vegas Art Museum offers weekday and Saturday morning art classes. Call the museum at 259-4458 for dates, times and cost.

* Lied Discovery Children's Museum offers children's workshops in Egyptian paper beads, paw prints, paper strip mask-making, sundials, newspaper designs, sand painting, African hats, creating mazes, log cabin models, rope making, dream catchers, paper flowers, tie dye, shadow puppets and paper flying machines. Classes run June, July and August. Admission is $3 for children ages 3 to 11. Call the museum at 382-3445 for dates and times.

* Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art workshops include additive sculpture, still-life drawing and pastel during June and July. Call 434-2666 for dates, times and fees.
