Letter: Will’s stance on tax cut ridiculous
Tuesday, June 18, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
I have never been a big deficit hawk, but I say as long as we are going to be so concerned with the deficit let's be serious. Tax cuts absolutely have no place in any serious discussion about "balancing the budget" whether proposed by Republicans or Democrats. In fact any serious responsible discussion should include a tax increase, not a tax cut.
Just how much can you cut from the budget 'til you are seriously hurting the most vulnerable in our society? Bob Dole, while wildly blathering "about across the tax cuts" without saying how he will offset these tax cuts is merely pandering to a naive public which believes you can cut taxes and still balance the budget without touching their favorite programs. Dole knows better but panders on and on just the same.
Will then goes on to quote a statement by Calvin Coolidge to buttress his argument, but a lot of economists today believe his policies brought on the Great Depression. Sorry, George, darn not buying your balderdash!
