Fernley Woman Stabbed to Death; Grandson Injured
Friday, June 14, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
Gladys Jacobson, 74, died at the scene following the attack Thursday afternoon, authorities said. Her 14-year-old grandson was taken to Washoe Medical Center in Reno, where he underwent surgery and is recovering.
Sheriff's deputies said the suspect, who was wearing a ski mask, entered the apartment around 4:30 p.m.
It's the first homicide in Fernley in at least six years, said Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Lange.
Lange said the grandson told police he ran to his grandmother's bedroom for help and the intruder apparently got a knife from the kitchen. The attacker stabbed Gladys Jacobson in the neck and stomach, then stabbed the youth in the stomach and fled without taking anything.
The victim's son, Duffy Jacobson, also was in the apartment at the time, but told investigators he was sleeping in another room and did not hear anything. He called police after his son crawled to his room and woke him.
Authorities are looking for a suspect.
