Resort Scraps Idea of Mechanical Gorilla

The Las Vegas resort says it is scrapping plans to build a mechanical gorilla that would climb part way up the 1,149-foot Stratosphere Tower.

"The gorilla ride is definitely dead," Stratosphere spokesman Tom Bruny said Thursday. "It was determined to be not feasible and we couldn't be sure it would be an exciting ride. It was an engineering challenge, to say the least."

Former Stratosphere Chairman Bob Stupak announced plans for the 70-foot King Kong look-alike in January, saying the $6 million gorilla would carry 48 people halfway up the tower.

Stupak resigned as chairman Monday, the same day the company announced an $11 million quarterly loss.
