Buzz cash in on Veras’ first lapse
Thursday, July 25, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
SALT LAKE CITY -- Dario Veras picked an inopportune time to give up his first home run with the Las Vegas Stars.
Veras, who had not allowed a home run in 34 2/3 innings, surrendered a solo shot to Damian Miller with one out in the bottom of the ninth as the Stars fell to the Salt Lake Buzz 7-6.
Veras (4-2) had replaced Joey Long with one out in the inning after the left-hander apparently injured himself while facing the previous batter. Miller hit Veras' third pitch deep over the left-field wall to send the Stars to their fourth consecutive loss.
The game was played before a sellout crowd of 15,500 at Franklin Quest Field.
For the second night in a row, the Buzz jumped out to an early lead, only to have Las Vegas rally and tie the score late in the game. Salt Lake led 5-0 after two innings and 6-3 after five, but the Stars tied the score at 6 with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.
Julio Bruno drove in four runs for the second straight game, and Doug Dascenzo collected a single, double and triple to pace the Stars.
The series continues this evening at 6 with the Stars' Scott Lewis facing Salt Lake's Scott Klingenbeck. The game will be televised live to Southern Nevada on Prime Cable channels 1 and 48.
