* BORN: Aug. 5, 1932, at the then newly-built Las Vegas Hospital on 8th Street and Ogden Avenue.
* EDUCATION: Graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in the top 50 of a class of 750 in 1955. Earned a master's degree in astronautical engineering at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
* MILITARY: Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force after opting for a career as a pilot after graduating from the Naval Academy.
* MARRIAGE: Joan, in 1955, a day after graduation. The two had met at a college dance.
* HIGHLIGHT: Maintained a 4.0 grade point average at the academy, earning a coveted star on his collar all four years.
* RETIREMENT: 1975 from the military.
* DIED: Tuesday in Las Vegas.
