Trombonists make plans for 12th annual concert
Monday, July 8, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
Jazz great Carl Fontana, Las Vegas favorite Si Zentner, and special guests Larry Zalkind and Jimmy Cleveland will lead the massed trombone choir of more than 100 in an afternoon of light classics and jazz standards. All proceeds go to support the Abe Nole music scholarship fund at UNLV.
The fund was established in memory of one of Las Vegas' most beloved musicians. Besides being a highly respected trombonist, Abe Nole arranged and wrote for his "Bonehead" band in the 1960s and '70s which involved many of the trombonists in Las Vegas.
When Nole died in 1985, several trombonists decided to get together and organize a mass trombone concert in his honor. The initial concert was such a success that it has been repeated annually with trombonists from all over the country traveling to Las Vegas and donating their time to participate in the mass concert.
General admission to the concert is $7; students, seniors and military is $5. Tickets are on sales at the Ham Concert Hall box office, the Drum Shop, Family Music Center and The Upper Ear. For donation and additional information, call 895-3736.
