Many classes tailored for mature students

Thursday, Feb. 29, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

In addition to the six Elderhostel programs slated this year for UNLV, which will offer courses in the local arts, the desert and gaming, senior students can participate in classes through the Division of Continuing Education and UNLV's regular academic program.

Many continuing education classes are tailored for mature students, with shorter time periods and staggered scheduling to make them more accessible, said Tup Tupper, coordinator of Programs for Older Students.

Nevada residents who are 62 or older may also take university academic courses. Because older students are not required to pay registration fees, Tupper asks them to register after paying students have had a chance to register.

The Extended Education Center for Lifelong Learning, better known as EXCELL, is a learning-teaching society made up of about 200 local senior citizens, some of whom volunteer to develop the courses.

A $35-per-semester fee allows students to sign up for as many as four study groups, such as current events, Eastern philosophies, local history, literature and great-books discussions.

For information about continuing education, academic courses for older students and EXCELL, call Tupper at 895-3394 or 895-4469.
