Salvation Army not likely to reach fund-raising goal

A Salvation Army official says "it will take a miracle" for the organization to reach its goal of raising $350,000 this holiday season through its annual bell-ringing drive.
"To date, we have only collected about $125,000, and with just a few days left in the Christmas season, it seems unlikely that we will even collect as much as the $221,000 we took in last year," said Lt. Col. Jim Sullivan.
Sullivan said the drop in holiday income is occurring at a time when the Salvation Army has a record number of families and needy individuals to help.
The organization's Angel Tree program also is in dire straits, Sullivan said.
"We have more than 700 needy children that have not been adopted as of this morning," Sullivan said. "We urgently need to have additional donations of toys or else many of the families that applied for Christmas assistance may be disappointed."
Anyone who would like to help can call the Salvation Army at 870-4430 or mail a donation to the Salvation Army at Box 28369, Las Vegas, NV 89126.
