School kids to get help crossing streets

Children are taking an active role in their own safety starting this week as crossing guards begin passing them miniature stop signs to hold as they make their way across area streets.
Metro Police are behind the new Junior Crossing Guard Program which was created to make children more visible while in the road, said Metro spokesman Sgt. Greg McCurdy.
"The goal of this program is to remind citizens to stop for our children so they can cross the street safely," McCurdy said.
Metro has crossing guards at 77 elementary schools and 127 guards working throughout the city and county.
