Letter: Nonsmoking casinos don’t make a profit in Las Vegas

Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

There was a so-called risk-taker on the Strip who changed the casino to smoke-free. It lasted better than a year before it was forced to revert back to allowing smoking because of dwindling profits.

If the moaners and groaners had supported it, perhaps it would have remained smoke-free.

Every casino has an area to accommodate non-smokers, but those areas also have a lot of empty seats.

If a non-smoker chooses to sit in a smoking area, he or she has to respect the rights of others, including the right of any business to run their business in a manner, which proves to be most profitable. It's profits, Mr. Cook, that builds new hotels and casinos.
