Walker to furnish homes for needy
Tuesday, Dec. 3, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.
For the third consecutive year, Walker Furniture will furnish the homes of 12 needy families in time for Christmas.
The company is accepting letters describing why certain families should receive the furniture. Deadline is Dec. 10. Write to: Larry Alterwitz, president, Walker Furniture, 301 S. Martin Luther King Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89106.
Letters also may be hand-delivered to the store.
Individuals may send a letter on their own behalf or for another family. All letters will be reviewed by an independent panel, which will assist in selecting the 12 families.
This year's "Home for the Holidays" panel includes Gov. Bob Miller; Mayor Jan Laverty Jones; Sandra Thompson, managing editor of the Las Vegas SUN; Jack Harpster, advertising director for the Las Vegas Review-Journal; Kendell Tenney, news anchor for KVBC Channel 3; Paula Francis, news anchor for KLAS Channel 8; Alyson McCarthy, news anchor for KTNV Channel 13; Candace Ruisi, executive director of the the Women's Development Center; Carolyn Forrester, volunteer coordinator for Clark County Social Services; and Jane Jensen, vice president of community services for United Way Services Inc.
"This is one way Walker Furniture gives something back to the community each year," Alterwitz said. "We hope to make the holidays brighter for 12 deserving families and we're asking members of the community to help us by coming forward with their recommendations."
Deliveries will begin Dec. 17. Applicants must reside in Clark County.
