Letter: Having police serve as elected officials a conflict

Tuesday, Dec. 3, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

Keeping that thought in mind, we as citizens must now confront the fact that there are two active-duty policemen on the Clark County Commission and the Las Vegas City Council. It is a very disturbing situation, which will not stand up under competent judicial review. Such a conflict arises that it boggles the mind and should concern any well-informed citizen. How can cops both make and then enforce the laws simultaneously? That is the question. Have we already allowed our servants to become our masters?

The lowest ranking man on the police department has more power than any CEO of the largest corporation. They have the power of life and death over us "ordinary citizens," in fact, one could say they have become judge, jury and executioner of the less fortunate among us. Separated powers have served this country well; any else is unthinkable. Let us never forsake the principles this country was founded for.
