Teams formed for second President’s Cup tournament

Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1996 | 11:59 a.m.

LAST WEEK'S Greater Vancouver Open and NEC World Series of Golf were the final events in which PGA players could earn points for the second President's Cup, scheduled Sept. 13-15 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Lake Manassas, Va.

This biennial event pits the top 10 players (and two captain's choices) from the U.S. Tour, based upon 1995-96 PGA earnings, against a similar number of international players (excluding the British Isles and Europe), based upon their current Sony rankings.

The U.S. team consists of Mark O'Meara, Tom Lehman, Phil Mickelson, Mark Brooks, Davis Love III, Corey Pavin, Scott Hoch, Steve Stricker, David Duval and Fred Couples.

Greg Norman heads the international squad which includes fellow Australians Steve Elkington and Craig Parry; New Zealander Frank Nobilo; Vijay Singh of Fiji; Jumbo Ozaki of Japan; Zimbabwe's Nick Price and Mark McNulty and South Africans Ernie Els and David Frost.

In the inaugural President's Cup, the USA defeated a rather weak international team, 20-12.

In last week's column it was reported the Las Vegas Founders Club, via the Las Vegas Invitational, has received -- and donated -- more than $700,000 over the years from money derived from the PGA Tour's Charity Team Competition.

This prompted a few calls requesting further information regarding the Founders Club.

The Las Vegas Founders Club, a nonprofit corporation, was founded in June of '82 to promote and support the many quality aspects of Las Vegas.

The club's primary function is to act as the governing body of our Las Vegas Invitational, and, in conjunction with Tru Green-Chem Lawn, the Las Vegas Senior Classic.

Proceeds derived from the tournaments go directly to the Las Vegas Founders Club Foundations, which in turn provide contributions to worthy local organizations.

More than $2.5 million has been donated to local charities since 1982, with beneficiaries including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, Opportunity Village, Boy Scouts of America, the YMCA, WestCare, Catholic Community Services, Association of the Handicapped and the Junior League of Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Invitational, scheduled Oct. 2-6, is celebrating 14 years of supporting local, charitable organizations -- the Founders' goal of giving something back to the community for its constant and continued support of both the Las Vegas Invitational and the LV Senior Classic.
