Adcock overcrowding woes placed on Sept. 10 agenda

An effort to get a cap placed on enrollment at overcrowded Adcock Elementary School will have to wait until the Sept. 10 School Board meeting.
Board member Lois Tarkanian told parents at a meeting Monday afternoon at the school that she would attempt to have it addressed as an emergency item recommended for referral to the superintendent.
But Tarkanian said Tuesday she was told "it isn't an emergency," and she wasn't allowed to bring the matter up as a formal referral to Superintendent Brian Cram.
"The principal at Adcock and I told them in the spring we were going to go past (enrollment) projections, and the students came," Tarkanian said. "I think there will be more children coming in after Labor Day."
Parent Sarah Rodriguez said at Tuesday's board meeting that she was "appalled at the overcrowding" at Adcock, near Torrey Pines Drive and U.S. 95.
Adcock has almost 200 more students than its capacity. Two portables are expected to be installed at the campus this week.
Rodriguez has a 6-year-old disabled child attending Adcock. Special education students at the school were bused to Twin Lakes Elementary School to free up space at Adcock.
"Special needs children do not need the chaos, the lack of structure that is occurring," she said. "Please do not dismiss this group of children. These children need to be treated specially. I will plead with you, please look at the alternatives so the kids at Adcock can stay at Adcock."
"I wish it could have gone better for the Adcock students," Tarkanian said. "What I'm concerned with is that children will begin to bond with their teachers, and then what's going to happen? Are we going to be shifting students around all over the place?"
