Road construction to begin on Hoover Dam project

The highway across Hoover Dam will be resurfaced and the sidewalk on the lake side of the structure will be widened.

The project on U.S. 93 is set to begin at 8 p.m. Sunday and will continue through September, with much of the work done at night and in the early morning to minimize traffic delays, Interior Department officials said.

On Sundays through Wednesdays, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., traffic flow across the dam will be reduced to one lane. Flagmen at each end of the dam will direct traffic, and 30 to 60 minute delays are expected, officials said.

From 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays both traffic lanes across the dam will be open. From 6 a.m. Thursdays to 8 p.m. Sundays, both lanes will be open.

The sidewalk on the Lake Mead side will be closed periodically during the day throughout the construction period. The sidewalk, completed in 1935 with the dam, is being widened to handle greater pedestrian traffic.
