She has been a second mother to the other kids in the family since she was 9. That is the last time she remembers seeing her father, who abandoned the family. Her mother does alterations and her small salary barely takes care of the needs of the family.
Mary Ruth wants to go to summer camp and her mother writes "she is such a dear, sweet girl and I can't afford to send her to camp. She deserves happiness for all she does for others."
