Recent drownings at Lake Mead

Selected accidents at Lake Mead National Recreation Area since 1990:

* JUNE 1990: A 32-year-old man, not wearing a life jacket, drowns at Lake Mead while trying to save his 8-year-old daughter. The girl, who was wearing a life jacket, was swimming when winds kicked up, causing choppy waves. She called to her dad, who jumped in but could not get back to the boat. The girl reached the boat and survived.

* AUGUST 1990: A 41-year-old man is found near the entrance to Callville Bay Harbor. He drowned on July 14 while boating. Also, an 8-year-old boy drowns in the Las Vegas Wash after getting caught in the current.

* MAY 1991: A 35-year-old Las Vegas man drowns at Lake Mead while attempting to tow a small inflatable raft carrying a 4-year-old boy to shore. Relatives found the boy unharmed.

* JULY 1992: A 2-year-old North Las Vegas boy dies after falling off an alligator-shaped raft at Boulder Beach on Lake Mead. Also, the body of a 16-year-old Las Vegas boy is recovered in the Gypsum Wash area, where days earlier he had gone swimming with friends and disappeared.

* OCTOBER 1992: A 35-year-old man drowns while trying to save friends after leaping off a houseboat at Squaw Peaks Cove in Arizona, nine miles south of Willow Beach. The others survived.

* JULY 1993: A 60-year-old man drowns in 4 1/2 feet of water off Special Events Beach.

* JULY 1994: A 16-year-old boy drowns at Lake Mead after swimming for a ball that drifted from shore.

* SEPTEMBER 1994: Divers locate the body of a man who drowned near Government Wash. The man had tried to swim across a narrow cove.

* JULY 1995: A 20-year-old North Las Vegas man is found by a Park Service diver in 32 feet of water at Lake Mead. He was about 25 feet from shore in the Water Barge Cove, west of Callville Bay on Lake Mead.
