Lake safety tips

Lake Mead safety tips:

* SWIMMING: Swim parallel to the shore at a depth in which you can stand with your head above the water line.

* BOATING: Enroll in a boating safety class. Keep appropriate life jackets on board for all passengers. While it is mandatory for children under 12 to wear life jackets, the National Park Service recommends all nonswimmers wear them.

* NO BOOZE: Avoid drinking alcohol altogether. If you must drink, do so in moderation and avoid activities that require sharp reflexes of a totally sober person.

* AVOID CLIFFS: Cliff diving is not recommended. If you must dive off cliffs, first swim in the area and look for underwater obstructions. Dive in feet first and at a safe distance from any jutting rocks.

* CHILDREN: Assign one adult to supervise each child who is swimming. Children should wear life jackets whenever they are in or even near the water.

* TOY RAFTS: Don't rely on inflatable rafts or toys to keep you or a child afloat. You can easily fall off or be knocked off them, or they can be blown into deeper water where drownings may occur.
