Community college’s ReEntry Center helps divorcees start their careers

The Community College of Southern Nevada can help divorced people start a career through its ReEntry Center.

Several fields are offered: apprenticeship studies in blue-collar trades, certified nursing assistants and general studies for those trying to obtain a GED or to prepare for college entry.

Money is provided through the federal Department of Education depending on family income. Once enrolled, students are encouraged to obtain Pell grants to defray their educational expenses.

"We have a lot of seminars to bring people's self-esteem up," said Manager Deana Zelenik. "We don't set students up to fail."

Zelenik said the ReEntry Center has a 70 percent placement rate for apprentice programs. Last semester, the center on CCSN's Cheyenne Avenue campus handled 350 students. The majority were divorced or unmarried.

The program helps single parents with child care and transportation. Workshops improve skills in parenting, budgeting and credit management.

For information, call 651-4331. Your name will be put on a list for the next semester. A letter inviting you to attend an orientation will be sent out six to eight weeks before classes.

An appointment will be made with a career adviser, who will also provide details on obtaining financial assistance.
