Stars split twinbill

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Todd Steverson and Craig Colbert each drove in two runs to lead the Las Vegas Stars to a 7-5 victory and a doubleheader split with the Vancouver Canadians Wednesday night at Nat Bailey Stadium.

In the first game, Vancouver edged the Stars 2-1 despite another strong outing by starter Scott Lewis. The former UNLV star allowed only two runs on five hits and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings, but suffered his second loss in as many decisions.

In the nightcap, Las Vegas finally received the timely hitting that has been missing the past week. The Stars (5-12) battled back from a 4-0 deficit to win for only the second time in 10 games.

Trailing 4-0 after two innings, the Stars scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Vancouver tied the score with a run in the fourth, but the Stars regained the lead in the fifth on a run-scoring fielder's choice by Jason Thompson. Las Vegas added an insurance run in the seventh on a run-scoring ground out by Colbert.

Steverson, playing in in only his third game for the Stars after being sent down by the San Diego Padres, hit a solo home run in the third inning.

Weston Weber (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Stars and got the win. Ron Villone worked the seventh inning and notched his first save.

In the first game, Lewis gave up only one run through 6 1/3 innings and left with the score tied 1-1 with one on and one out in the seventh. Dustin Hermanson came on in relief for the Stars and let in the run on a one-out suicide squeeze bunt.

Thompson had tied the score at 1-1 with a one-out, solo home run in the sixth inning.

The Stars and Canadians conclude the series today with a doubleheader beginning at 12:15 p.m. The Stars return home Friday night to begin an eight-game homestand at Cashman Field.
