A 4-year-old boy started a fire that caused $50,000 worth of damage to an apartment complex, Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Evert Wilson said.

Firefighters Tuesday evacuated the Island Club Apartments at 3700 E. Bonanza Road at Pecos Road after they were called to the 7:19 a.m. fire.

The fire was extinguished 15 minutes later, Wilson said.

Three residents suffered from smoke inhalation but declined treatment, authorities said.

The fire originated in a closet where the boy was playing with matches or a lighter, Wilson said.

Four apartment units sustained smoke, heat and water damage, while the unit where the fire originated sustained heavy fire, heat and smoke damage.
