Mail-in licenses draw a crowd

More than 5,000 Nevada drivers renewed their licenses by mail in March, avoiding a visit to their local Department of Motor Vehicles office.

The figure represents 46 percent participation in the new program among those eligible in March.

"We are pleased with the response," said Bruce Glover, the DMV's driver's license chief. "It has taken most other states with the program two to three years to achieve 50 percent participation."

Motorists eligible for the renew-by-mail program must be 25 to 70 years old, have no more than two traffic tickets in the past four years, and have no major medical restrictions.

Eligible drivers are automatically sent forms and instructions 60 days before their renewal date.

More than 200,000 Nevadans will need to renew their licenses this year. "If 60 percent renew by mail, between 200 and 300 people can avoid a visit to Southern Nevada DMV offices each day," said Donna West, assistant chief of DMV services.
