Jr. Golf Association to offer kids classes

THE SOUTHERN NEVADA Junior Golf Association is working with the Clark County Parks and Recreation Department to offer beginning and intermediate junior golf classes.

The SNJGA is seeking area professionals to teach at these clinics for a $14 per hour stipend. Classes will be held one or two days per week for three weeks at a time.

Beginning classes are open to youngsters ages 6-13 with the intermediate lessons designed for golfers 11-15.

The clinics will be held at Sunrise Community Center in the Lake Mead/Nellis area; Paradise Community Center in the southeast and the Kenny Guinn Community Center at West Tropicana and Torrey Pines.

Area professionals interested in administering the program are asked to contact any of the following: Randy Reese, Sunrise Community Center, 455-7600; Jacque Alter, Paradise Community Center, 455-7513; Mary Ann Wainwright, Kenny Guinn Community Center, 455-8393.

The $1 million Las Vegas Senior Classic, set April 25-28 at the TPC in Summerlin, once again has drawn a top-class field.

At this stage, the only top-25 player who will be missing from the 56-man field is Jack Nicklaus. Everyone else that matters will be in attendance, including John Bland, Tony Jacklin, Larry Mowry, Larry Ziegler, John Schroeder and Ed Sneed, who have received sponsors exemptions.

Former champions Ray Floyd, Gibby Gilbert, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Charles Coody, Al Geiberger, Bruce Crampton and last year's winner, Jim Colbert, have committed.

The Las Vegas Country Club hosted a Men's Member/Guest last week in which each player was given a point quota based on his full handicap. A gross bogey was awarded one point, par was worth two points, a birdie was four and an eagle was worth eight points.

The team that came closest to its point or exceeded it by the most was declared the winner.

Brad Fields and partner Tony Balen decimated the first flight, coming in with plus 6. The Harold Thomas/Kenny Houng pairing placed second at zero with the teams of Chuck Weigman/Ron Meyer and Gerald Kring/Ted Buban sharing third at minus 4.

Garwood Van, 84, and younger partner Nick Bernadi handily won the second flight with a plus 3. Second at minus 6 were Jack Libby and Steve Conrad while Jeff Harmon/John Toman and Stan Mallin/Charles Silverman were third with minus 7.

In the third flight, Michael Zone and Alan Meyers prevailed with a minus 2. Cliff Beadle and John Medler followed at minus 4 with third place going to the Art Lurie/Alex Delaplath duo at minus 5.
