73-year Las Vegas resident Virginia Culley dies

Virginia Culley, a 73-year Las Vegas resident and longtime postal worker, has died. She was 80.

Culley, who at age 7 moved to Las Vegas from her native Arizona when her father was made foreman at the Gypsum Mine in Arden, died Sunday in Las Vegas.

Services are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 315 S. Casino Center Blvd. Viewing will be from 4-7 p.m. today at Bunker Brothers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Memory Gardens.

Culley was the mother of the late Paul Chavez, who managed the drag races at the old Stardust International Raceway.

Born Jan. 22, 1916, in Ray, Ariz., Culley graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1933.

In 1954, Culley went to work part time for the U.S. Postal Service as a window clerk. She was promoted to finance examiner and retired in 1982. She was an early member of the Las Vegas Mesquite Club.

Culley is survived by a son, Henry "Rick" Culley of Las Vegas; two brothers, Albert Chavez and Benjamin Chavez, both of Reno; and two sisters, Alma Sprague of Las Vegas and Helen Halladay of Pasadena, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
