NY-NY hires key execs

New York-New York, the $460 million joint venture of MGM Grand Inc. and Primadonna Resorts Inc., has hired four executives as its opening date draws closer.

The venture named William Harland vice president of casino games, Alex Elliott vice president of slot operations, Patrick Thorne vice president of finance and treasurer and Dennis Shipley director of human resources.

"The caliber of talent and expertise they bring to the executive team puts us in prime position to gear up for our grand opening in late 1996," said William Sherlock, president.

Harland will administer all casino activities and supervise 500 employees. A former State Gaming Control Board agent, Harland has 24 years of casino management experience, most recently as vice president of casino operations with Hilton gaming properties in Reno.

Elliott will be responsible for slot operations and that department's 250 employees. He has 15 years of gaming experience, including slot operations director at Palace Station and slot manager at the Imperial Palace.

Thorne will administer all financial and accounting operations at New York-New York. He has 25 years of gaming industry experience, including high-ranking posts at Stations Casinos and the Desert Inn.

Shipley will be responsible for staffing and training of the company's 2,700 employees. He is a former corporate director of human resources for Circus Circus Enterprises and served in similar positions at Caesars Tahoe and Summa Corp. over the past 26 years.

Under construction at the Strip and Tropicana Avenue, New York-New York will open late this year, the third of three mega-resort openings in 1996.

Stratosphere Corp.'s resort complex, highlighted by a 1,149-foot tower, opens April 30. Monte Carlo, a joint venture between Mirage Resorts Inc. and Circus Circus Enterprises, opens June 26.

New York-New York re-creates traditional New York landmarks, including a classical Manhattan skyline with 12 skyscrapers.
