Exact Cause of Blaze that Destroyed I-80 Landmark Unknown

"There's no hard evidence which points to a cause," Deputy State Fire Marshal Dennis Ely said. "At this time, it is going down as undetermined, But it does appear to be an accidental fire."

He said evidence supports employees' statements that Tuesday's blaze began in a trash bin full of boxes. The truck stop was reduced to a hull of charred timbers before the closest fire crews could respond 30 minutes after it broke out. There were no injuries.

The ramshackle truck stop 33 miles north of Fallon and about midway between Fernley and Lovelock is something of a landmark to travelers on I-80, largely because it's about the only structure along the barren 60-mile drive that crosses the Humboldt Sink.
